I never did, however, think to myself "I don't want to die b/c there might not be Growing Pains in heaven" when I was 5. I did think that about the Cosby Show.
i'm going with cosby show because they had better sidekick characters like rudy's friends peter and bud, and theo's friend cockroach. he was totes cooler than booger.
also claire is the best TV mom ever. but growing pains does have the better theme song...
They both nuked the fridge by adding the precocious child (Raven Symone and that annoying little redhead girl who talked like she had marbles in her mouth), but I don't remember the Seaver clan performing a choreographed rendition of "The Nighttime is the Right Time" on their staircase.
The answer to this question is determined by a single consideration: which show entered its mid to late seasons with more grace and "humor"? Because no quotient of joy we may have taken from those innocent, early years, can erase the horror of Raven Simone or a Born-Again Kirk Cameron. Or the outrageuously trite return of Lisa Bonet when she realized that she would never have a career without Bill Cosby. Or that tiny Annie looking girl who starting shacking up with the Seavers -- does anyone even remember what her ridiculous backstory is? Or - god help me - A Different World.
And I think I answered the question with that last point. Growing Pains ran for fewer seasons, there were no spin-offs, and gave us Leo DiCaprio.
Wow. I need to watch some Arrested Development right now to purge myself of such awfulness.
i LOVED the cosby performance episodes. and the episode where theo wanted to move out and rudy was the landlord. awesome. while growing pains did give us leo it just doesn't compare to cosby. i loved them both in the 80s but i can only watch the cosby show now. that show had staying power.

cosby show. i kinda hated mike seaver.
Cosby Show. I wanted Clair as my mom, only so I could see her go all ape-sh*t on my brothers.
Cosby all the way...i love reruns on TV land...such classic humor...
That's like choosing eating or breathing.

Cosby. Gotta love Heathcliff's sweaters.
Cosby. And the delicious Jell-o pudding pops.
One more vote for the Cos. This was an especially big fav (along with Roseanne) among my college roomies.

You know why we named you Rudy...because you're so rude!
I like to take my time while eating the pudding yaaaa!
Cosby Show--I was positive that I would be a better Rudy.
I don't know about the Growing Pains theme being better, though. I loved that the Cosby intro would change every season.
I'd be lying if I didn't say Cosby.
But, props must be given to Growing Pains for having a character named Boner.

Cosby wins...not even close.
are you kidding? cosby no doubt.
Cosby, no contest.

totes cosby.
Cosbys all the way. In my eyes, the Arnolds are the only family that can even compete with them.
I heart ION, TV Land, and Nick at Nite.
the annie-like girl was chrissy, and she was their daughter! duh!!!!!!
Why does Mayor Bloomberg have to side with the white people? Janice and I love the blacks.
How can you choose between two classics?
