Can he read either A Prayer for Owen Meany or Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (sure I spelled that wrong) and let me know which one I should read?
Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential, and if he already read that, then Medium Raw (the second related book by Anthony Bourdain).
They are fun, edgy, do not require too much mental energy, and one does not have to be a foodie to appreciate them. He also curses a lot in them, which is kind of shocking/yet liberating in print.
"The Hunger Games" -- I just finished the second in the series "Catching Fire" and can't wait to read the third.
Yes, I know the books are located in the tween section of the library, but I loved the first two and couldn't put them down.
I also read "The Help" before those two and loved that book as well. Much different topic. The movie is coming out soon, so worth it to read the book first.

Game of Thrones and a Clash of Kings. They are long books, so even if he reads all of Game of Thrones, he can start Clash of Kings.
I've also heard good things about Hunger Games.
City of Thieves. It's quick, hilarious, and really well done.
