What is your opinion on men wearing white pants? And what factor(s) affect the acceptability of the wearing of white pants?

Maybe if they're on a boat? No linen though.

The only--repeat, ONLY--acceptable circumstance for an American man wearing white pants is if he is serving our great country in the United States Navy.

Foreigners are a different story. I'll defer to Andrew on that angle.

Scott is right. However, the proper term for people living outside the U.S. is "illegals".

Of the men I've asked recently, they're split pretty evenly (and disturbingly passionate about it). I say as long as you can pull it off, go for it. At least they don't have to worry about getting a period in them.

I'd never really thought about this until recently. I'd say that if a man is in the tropics and his name is Taye Diggs he can wear all of the white linen pants his heart desires. Other than that I think I'd prefer a man wearing white pants made of any material than clam diggers of any color.

There are certain European makers of men's white pants that do a good job, like GStar and Diesel. No white linen pants or anything from J.Crew. Andrew must be running late this morning... ;-)

You should never wear white pants after Labor Day (unless there is some off-season croquet or jai alai matches).

Consult the Beverly Sutton Book of Fashion.

(Thanks Jon. I was busy trying to remember how to spell jai alai)

I wouldn't wear them, but wouldn't hate on those who disagree

Only during fleet week or a revival of On the Town, Anchors A-weigh, or Anything Goes (other musicals involving singing and dancing sailors with which I am not familiar would also go in this category).

In HS we did Anything Goes and the male dancers had to wear sailor outfits. Some of them thought it would be funny to go commando for dress rehearsal...but they didn't think about the whole bright stage lighting thing. Oh, and I should mention that our dress rehearsal was performed for visiting elementary schoolers.

I agree with Leslie. If you're a celebrity or a skinny European, go for it. As for the guys I know in the U.S., it's a big no.

I think wearing white pants is entirely appropriate to the yacht club between memorial day and labor day, maybe paired with a blue blazer and an oxford button down..... either that or nantucket reds.

if a man knows what he is doing enough to pull this look off, then hooray.

no white after labor day is so dated. hit me in the face with a phone. i dare you.
