Obligation, I say for this year. No bonuses, no prizes... but in the past our raffle prizes and parties were sweet. I won a $200 certificate to Red Door Spa last year.

awesome, we get 2 drink tickets a piece and those of us who drink spend the evening scamming drink tickets off those who don't. then there's an afterparty, which this year involved karaoke and lots of sake. it's pretty fun.

our office is so small, that this year our work party consisted of dinner at Al Crostino. Nice dinner on the boss? Awesome.

Depends on the location, as well as the amount of free food and (alcoholic) beverages.

i enjoy my coworkers, several of whom are loyal QotD commenters, so I'm going to say awesome. our holiday parties are even more awesome when we get gifts from our firm's collective AMEX points or super sweet bonuses.

Obligation. I've never been to a good work holiday party. No good food. No booze. Also. I hate talking about work when not AT work.

obligation. the people in my office are boring nerds...

also, it's during the work day and us contractors can't bill for it. so it's pretty much forced unpaid vacation.

Having to be on your game all night because 2/3 of the people at the party are clients = lame!... So it all depends really. Work party with clients sucks. Just coworkers is ok and can be fun to meet your coworkers significant other!

It was an obligation for me, until this year. We went to a hibachi Japanese restaurant in Annapolis. Can we say sake was served?

Total obligation this year. Downgrade to a lunch gathering today at 1. Not expected to be a terribly festive event, as 10 people got let go from my firm on Monday, but at least we get to go home afterward. Oh, wait. I don't. I get to work on a bunch of other crap to prepare myself for working from home ALL WEEKEND because God hates me and doesn't want me to have access to the resources I need in my office, and has decided to shit frozen white powder all over my life for the next two days. Happy Holidays, Everyone!!!!

if it's off site and at night then it's not an obligation. i just went to my first work party and it was awesome. why? OPEN BAR!

depends on the office. In my experience, they have been awesome. It is the next day that sucks.

i feel like it depends on the year and the morale of the company. honestly, in some cases, i'd rather management just paid for an open bar somewhere and then didn't show up and let the non management folks give free reign to their drunkenness. but i agree with cate, much more fun to have everyone there when we get bigger checks or tvs and ipods. this year the open bar didn't include champagne...so they lost me right there.
