Is it acceptable to wear sweatpants or pajama pants at your holiday family dinner?

if your holiday family dinner consists of you and a sibling getting drunk on wild turkey in front of the TV, then yes.

Absolutely, with or without the wild turkey. It's about the food and the people and not worrying about spilling gravy on a silk shirt. If everyone is comfortable, they stay longer. Sometimes that's a good thing. And if a repressed fight from childhood breaks out, it can be amusing to the others.

Depends on your family. If it's immediate family, def. If it's cousins and people you rarely see, it would probably come across a tad sloppy.

I'm usually the most dressed up in my family because I put on a sweater and jeans. Generally I think the rule is that you should wear something decent on top in case mom wants to take a picture of everyone at the table, and then sweats or pj pants are totally acceptable on the bottom. jeans have no give anyway, and it's hard to eat your weight in food without an elastic or drawstring waist.

I'm with Pinch. Immediate family then it's a definite yes. I would probably wear sweatpants, Uggs and a ratty UNH sweatshirt. This is especially true if I don't have to leave the house at all.

If I have to leave to house or see people I don't normally see then I would likely put on real clothes.

As for tomorrow, I can't freaking wait to eat stuffing and mashed potatoes in sweatpants while watching a movie marathon. Three cheers for urban/chosen family!

Yeah, no. Maybe if the family dinner consisted of a Swanson TV Dinner. What I like to serve is a little bit of class and civility at the table.

my family has some strange holiday norms. want to drink 11 beers? go right ahead, but you will look respectable while you do it.

absolutely. It's my holiday standard. I make no effort what so ever!

we dress up so showing up in sweatpants or pajama pants would be frowned upon and mocked

If you have to ask the question, you already know the answer. Pajamas for a holiday dinner? God no. For me, it's not even about family, it's a about honoring the meal and the dining experience. Good food and good wine are deeply respected in house. We would sooner wear pajamas to church than the dinner table.
