my sister always wanted to go on a hot air balloon ride and so her boyfriend decided that that would be the best time to pop the question - she was thrilled obviously. the live in CO so the view was stunning of course.

i think the best one i can think of right now is from my boss, who was on a new years vacation with his girlfriend on some island in the caribbean and proposed on new years eve and then the next day or so he took her for brunch at a neighboring resort and her sister was there waiting because he was surprising her with the wedding as well. She and her sister went shopping for a white dress and they got married at sunset on a cliff. i thought it was pretty cool, but obviously not ideal for everyone. she would have been wicked pissed if she was someone who had always wanted a big or even pre-planned wedding.

hm. I can only think of one that's a little different from the norm. My friend, knowing his gf's love of having control of the remote, put the ring in the battery compartment so that when she went to use it, it wouldn't work and she'd look to see what the problem was. I guess that night, she was tired and didn't care what they watched, so she kept giving him back the remote. Eventually he got her to open it and they've been married about a year now. Yay!

I say keep it simple, not public, and expect a couple of speedbumps. Good luck to your friend, Leslie!

Whatever you do, don't do it at a Sporting event.

this is probably not going to be much help, but my friend's story of proposing to her boyfriend cracks me up.

She decided to do it while they were in the Seattle area visiting his parents. She bought him a ring (some kind of magnet one that is supposed to help circulation?) and then went hiking with him on his favorite trail. She pretended it didn't tire her out, even though it did (it was a big uphill climb) and when they got to the top, she popped the question! he said "fuck yeah!"

well, I guess that's actually my favorite proposal answer story, but it still makes me smile.

This isn't a proposal story, but it's my favorite romantic story. My parents were friends for six years thru college & a few years after before they dated. After college mom moved to AZ & dad started touring with David Bowie. When he came thru Pheonix on the Diamond Dogs tour, he asked her to come to the show, then asked her to come on tour with them. They spent the next few months touring with David Bowie while falling in love. Pretty kick ass, huh?

Interesting that only girls have answered this question.

Pretty ballsy for the girl to propose to the guy. Not saying its wrong but I don't think a lot of the girls I know would do it.

A girl i knew from high school was dating someone in Dropkick Murphy. He proposed during a concert where Bruce Springsteen was also on stage.

not at a restaurant... and i think somewhere they can go back to... a friend of mine got proposed to in an elevator at their old apt building... creepy if they go back to the site and linger in the elevator shaft...

place of their first date? kiss? shag?

my friend proposed to his girlfriend by attaching the ring to the collar of a beagle puppy, engraving the tag with "will you marry me" and tying the leash to a volleyball net they always passed on their way to their friday night dinner spot (they lived in florida). he knew she would have to pet the puppy and when she did she freaked out because she thought it was someone else's "engagement puppy".

she said yes. then about a year later she said nevermind and ran off with someone else.

the story is pretty cute, though.

i heart how my folks got engaged. they had been together for years and years and watched siblings, friends, everyone they know get married. after yet another wedding my mom starting giving my dad the business about them never getting engaged. this made something click in my dad's brain that, yes, this was in fact the woman he wanted to marry. that is very my dad. so he gets a ring and proposes not long after that. then my mom, instead of saying yes, starts crying and says no because she thought he didn't really want to marry her and that she had badgered him into it. he eventually convinced her and 34 years later...
