If you drink three glasses of wine by yourself on a random school/work night, does that make you an alcoholic?

God no. It makes you European.

Well, technically, it just means you're drinking way more than you should be. (Especially if you're a woman.)

I define alcoholism as when you need to start your day with a drink, not end it with one...

Three glasses of wine a day keeps the liver at bay.

I second Martin's definition.

not in the least bit...

Nope...if it were three bottles every night, then maybe. Or, it might just make you Ted Kennedy.

No. But if you drink three glasses of wine by yourself every school/work night, then you may have a problem. And if you drink so much on random school/work nights that you pass out with pizza in the oven and the smoke from the burning pizza wakes your roommate up in the middle of the night, then you should probably tone it down a bit.

I don't know the answer and couldn't find the clinical defintion on the internet.

But now on my work computer I have "definition of alcoholism" in search google search history. Awesome, that'll probably confirm some suspicions of my bosses.

No. It's just a little to take the edge off. Dammit. Get me another glass of wine!

I think sometimes three glasses is necessary.

Is it better to drink three glasses of wine by yourself or three pitchers with a bunch of goofballs playing flipcup?

And I third Martin's definition.

I agree. 3 glasses may be a necessary way to survive life.

It totally depends on how big the glasses are. I would still say the answer is no, but if the glasses are not that big, I say no big deal at all.

yeah, if "random" is every night, maybe. one night, not so much.

yeah, it's about frequency...if you do that every night and then you eventually need more than three glasses, it might be a thing. but we've all had those nights when one or two glasses ain't gonna get the job done.

or perhaps if you're my old roommate whose wine glasses are all decanters the size of your face and you go through booze so quickly every night that you're on a first name basis with all the liquor store employees in a 10 block radius, then it might be a problem. it was hard to track her drinking because she'd finish a bottle or six pack before i got home and it would never be in the fridge where i could see it.

Absolutely not! I agree with Martin on the definition and second all the frequency talk.

My sophomore english teacher defined alcoholism as any pattern in drinking...so as long as you are changing it up (gin one night, sweet tea vodka the next) what's the problem :-)I don't see a pattern there.

Cate-that whole pizza incident sounds like a fabulous story!

if by "3" you mean "9" and if by "glasses of wine" you mean"zips of crack" and if by random you mean "every time i can find a source..." then yes.. you're probably an alcoholic. and by "alcoholic" i mean "drug user."

Unknown said...

No way...but if you exchange "glasses" with "bottles," then you may have a problem.

getting on this one a couple days late b/c i was on vacation and i couldn't resist to answer! my answer is in line with everyone else but...here's another scenario -- if your boss steals your two bottles of wine from your desk thinking they are hers and drinks them by herself in her hotel room one night - that's the definition of alcoholic.
