Is it acceptable to be a fan of the college football team in the community where you grew up even if you didn't attend the school?

Oh, absolutely. However, it is unacceptable to root for the crosstown rival high school under any circumstances ever.

I wouldn't know. I can't say that URI or Brown University football were anything stellar.

Absolutely. I actually hate it when I hear people I went to school with say "but half these fans didn't even go here..."

Fuck those guys.

Yes!! Some of us were not fortunate enough to have a college football team to cheer for.

WE ARE...

No! Or, if you insist, you can't pretend that your allegiance is deeper than it actually is.

Also, if you love that team/school so much, why didn't you go to school there?

Andrew - how was RISD's team? I bet they have the prettiest uniforms

Do you think she's looking wistfully at a distant Russia?

My college didn't have a football team, actually. And in North Carolina, for the most part, we're not that concerned with college football. College basketball, however, is another story.

Cate I'm hurt.

The answer is definitively yes. Hook 'em Horns! Unless you're playing the Blue Devils.

Cate said...

i should amend my answer to say that anyone is welcome to cheer for the Texas Longhorns.

Dan said...

Cate, I think the allegiance can be just as strong! After all, if you grow up in a college town you grow up following the team, rather than starting in your late teens.

I think Cate is just in a bad mood this morning, either that or she's drinking some of Beenu's haterade.

I think it is totally acceptable to cheer for a team from your hometown.

Anecdote: It's not football, but when I was in school we had a pretty good hockey team and more than half the fans were people from the community, including lots of little kids, who I bet will be lifelong fans.

Yes! If not it would make TV irrelevant. Besides we just root against teams anyway.

absolutely. I grew up in a college town and cheer for that team.
The reason I didn't go to school there was because I grew up there and needed to get away.
I still like UNH, just like Maine better!

Go Black Bears!

Absolutely acceptable. My alma mater didn't have a football team, and I sure as f&%k wasn't going to pull for USC. Wasn't really into college football til I met the 'Rita, so she converted me to a PSU fan...and screw anyone who says that's not genuine.

College football is wonderful, but honestly, for me it's just a prelude for the winter when I watch an average of 10 college hoops games a week.
