I say it's ok to invite them, but be prepared for the responses. This another one of those questions where there are so many variables - small/big, local/long distance friends, incorporating the NYE theme, etc.?
Yeah it's fine. First wedding I went to was one on NYE. First I didn't have to worry about nye plans. Second, since I was already home in MI (as were others) I didn't have to pay for flights to and fro. It's a good way to save money for a lot of people in your party.
1.) I believe that crashing a party should be done by everyone at least once.
2.) I think that whoever has a wedding on NYE is arrogant. I don't care if previous ones were fun for you, blah, blah, blah. The couple who does this is taking a major holiday focused on personal self-reflection and merriment and making it a major holiday focused on them. I wouldn't go for fear of lack of space for both me and their ego.
The only way I'd say it wasn't cool is that you're taking a fun party night away from the staff who have to work the wedding.
I'm surprised to see the backlash against an NYE wedding. I mean honestly, so a friend of yours wants to give you free booze, music, and your friends all for a new years. Really? What was your other NYE option.
i think nye is the most overrated night ever and don't consider it a holiday at all. i think a wedding would make it more fun! i always thought it was a great idea, perhaps my ego is too big.
you know what is for sure not ok? inviting your friends and family to travel long distances for a wedding here: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=williston+north+dakota&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=Williston,+ND&gl=us&ei=S6fDSuunHdLjlAef75TIBQ&sa=X&oi=geocode_result&ct=title&resnum=1 on Jan. 2.

Is it my wedding?
I wouldn't want to have a NYE wedding in case people had other plans.

Why would you have a wedding on nye?
I say no. They'll feel guilty if they don't come, and if they do and it's not awesome they'll resent you. No fun for anyone.
Not nearly as bad as inviting your friends and family to a wedding on Super Bowl Sunday...
One of the best weddings I went to was on NYE!
P.S. Shout out to David who caught Lady Gaga's glove at the concert last night!!!
I say yes. However, you are then obligated to have a kickass reception. No pressure.

depends on the wedding (how big, how awesome, etc.)

I like the idea of a NYE wedding but that is probably because my NYEs are usually a letdown. I like the idea of having a fancy party with fun people.

I once thought it was absolutely unacceptable, but lately I've realized that NYE is overhyped anyway. So I guess my response now is why not?
